76. Did you ever buy an article of clothing without giving it much thought, only to have it prove much more valuable as time went on? What was the item and what happened?

I was recently in Montreal and thought I would grab something from one of my favourite vintage stores, and it has since proved to be a really useful item. It was a denim button down sleeveless vest with four buttons and cut off arms, also with an intricate sort of blue thread embroidery work on each shoulder. The reason it works so well is that you can wear it over another top, a blouse, a tank top, with shorts, or even over a dress, so it is really versatile and also casual and low-key.

I'm not sure what is meant here by valuable. Valuable in a sense that it became a go-to or valuable in a monetary sense? In either case, not really.

The blue sweater. On sale for super cheap at a clothing store that was closing. I wish I had bought ten. It was the greatest, now it's threadbare and I will never find it again.

A different aunt gave me a necklace when I was in 7th grade and she thought she was going to move to Russia. She had won it, and I'm the closest thing to a daughter that she has. How important it was to me that she picked me to give it to and took the time to explain it all mattered more and more to me as I got older.

Burberry Wool Trench Coat - Its timeless and I wear it at least a few times every winter. I thought I would wear it one season, but its paid for itself a few times over at this point.

Often I'll find I use my "second best" item to preserve the best version of it - a black handbag, for example, or a scarf. Then I will become greatly attached to the second best item, through use, and can't bear to think of being parted from it.

At the Commes de Garcon Event- it wasn’t even called a sample sale because it was a "once in a lifetime" event- one that I brought my crawling baby to, and let her out of my sight on more than one occasion, and also lied to my friend about the reason I was so late to pick up my other child from her- I was in line, and already had $300 worth of clothes. The older women behind me had a crumply looking black skirt. “Where did you get that?” I asked, and she pointed to nearby pile. I picked it up and bought the same one, without trying it on. I usually try everything on. This skirt was $200, it would have been an expensive mistake. It has one side in black nylon, the other side is a deconstructed patchwork of neoprene, what they make wetsuits out of? But it looks pretty normal. It has an elastic waist. I wear it *all the time*. I can wear it with any top, a T-shirt or a nice sweater, and I always feel like I look kinda cool. Cuz, you know, it’s Commes des Fucking Garcons.

Nearly ten years ago, I found a pair of beat-up, electric blue Doc Martens at a yard sale. They were two sizes too big, uncomfortable. For some reason (the bold, unusual color?), I took them with me on a month-long trip to Japan. I was walking miles every day, which left me with unnecessarily sore feet by nightfall. But the experience was so special that my uncomfortable boots took on this "companion" status. I have a whole series of boots-in-landscape photographs.
